For our Speaker Meeting in January, we tried a new format. Rather than having a guest speaker, members of the executive curated a series of videos and quizzes on the topic of "Real or Fake?? How to Tell the Difference Online". It was a fascinating morning, with lots of opportunities to learn some strategies to use as we consume media online.
Here are links to the videos we used:
Video #1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOEqDygg56w - This is a 2025 12 minute video with host Jeremy Carrasco who is an expert in the field of AI identification. He offers strategies to differentiate between real or AI generated video.
Video #2
https://www.ted.com/talks/supasorn_suwajanakorn_fake_videos_of_real_people_and_how_to_spot_them
This is a 2018 7 minute TED Talk offered by Supasorn Suwajanakorn. He shows fake videos of real people and how to spot them. Although the video is older, it is well worth watching for the strategies offered.
Video #3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APRo-b6eHy8 The host of this video is Catharina Doria and she offers 6 Strategies for Telling Real from AI photos.
After watching these videos, we tried 2 online quizzes to test our skills:
Quizzes:
Real or AI generated photo challenge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkwWEEZXjPw
Real or Fake Video Quiz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWLHAuUoYqQ
Bonus!! This is Part 2 of the first quiz above - more Real or AI photo challenges!! (We did not do this at the meeting, so have some fun and good luck!)

Final Video:
https://www.ted.com/talks/hany_farid_how_to_spot_fake_ai_photos This is another TED Talk with speaker Hany Farid, a Digital Forensics Expert. It is from 2025 and is 12 minutes long. (At the meeting, we started at 8:55 - the beginning is quite an in-depth forensics analysis of a military photo - interesting, but high level!) - His talk is called How to Spot Fake AI Photos. He gives some great advice for all of us in the last 5 minutes!
Here are a few other resources that we didn't use at the meeting, but that you may find interesting.
Detect Fakes - a research project from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management - The website has a survey displaying many different images. For each one, you’re asked to decide whether you believe it is AI-generated or real, and how confident you are in this judgment. You’re next provided some advice to consider and then you’re asked to confirm or change your final answers. There’s a short demographic quiz at the beginning that you need to complete before getting to the survey.

How to Distinguish AI-Generated Images from Authentic Photographs - detailed paper (but in lay terms) also from Kellogg Northwestern University describing how to identify “artifacts and implausibilities” in AI-generated images. This is lengthy with good info for someone looking for more information.
